Catching a cab gives travelers an easy way to get around Antigua while leaving the driving to someone else. Taxis can be found almost anywhere on the island. They meet every plane at the airport, and most taxi drivers wait in front of major hotels. A cab is also just a convenient phone call away from any location.
Unlike taxis in most North American cities, Antiguan taxi cabs aren't metered, and their rates are based on regulations set by a taxi cab association. Each taxi driver is supposed to have a copy of these rates in his vehicle, but that is not always the case. So before getting into the cab, make sure to negotiate the price with the driver. Bear in mind that it is not illegal to travel in a taxi without a car seat for young children you may be traveling with, but it is always a good idea to come prepared and make sure your children stay safe.
Taxis are a good way to explore the island, as a cab driver might also serve as a tour guide. Most drivers know the island and will wait for 30 minutes or more while tourists see the sights of Antigua at a cost of $5 per half hour. Reserving a taxi for an extended trip can cost $24 (USD) per hour, with the trip being no fewer than two hours, and touring arrangements and rates can be made through your hotel prior to pickup. The fare for traveling from the airport to English Harbour will be about $31(USD; to St. Johnson's village the fare will be about $8(USD).
Taxis may be a bit expensive as a means of island travel, but they are a hassle-free way to get a feel for the beautiful geography of Antigua.
