Antigua Travel Basics

With its gorgeous beaches, comfortable climate, and limitless activities and sights, Antigua is the perfect vacationing spot for anyone in need of a tropical getaway. When planning your vacation, it helps to familiarize yourself with the following basic facts that will make Antigua an easy destination.

A Place to Stay

Antigua's accommodations range from modest to exquisite. Depending on your budget and personal preferences, the island has a room for every pocketbook and taste.

Transportation

When you arrive on Antigua, there are several ways to get about. Taxis are the easiest and most convenient way to travel the island. Your driver can also act as a tour guide, helping you explore all of Antigua's sights and attractions without getting lost. Riding the bus is the most inexpensive way to tour the island. If you want to travel at your own leisure, renting a car, moped, or bike might be the option to suit your traveling needs.

Communication

Home is only a phone call away. Most hotels on the island provide phones in every room. If, for some reason, your hotel doesn't have a phone accessible to you, there is the Cable and Wireless in St. John's. Cellular phones generally get good reception on the island. If you want to send a letter or package via mail, Antigua has several post offices located around the island.

Wildlife

The wildlife and vegetation on Antigua might be a little different from your home country. When visiting the island, there are a few critters you might see during your stay.

  • Mongoose ??? These shy little animals look cute and cuddly, especially when they sit up on their hind legs, but don't try to approach or catch them. They are wild animals and can issue a nasty bite if they feel threatened.

  • Sea Urchins ??? Use caution while walking near coral or rocks on the beach, as these sea creatures are small, prickly, and will sting if you step on them. Otherwise they are not dangerous.

  • Spiders ??? Antigua's largest spider is the horse spider, which can grow to the size of the palm your hand. These spiders are shy, non-poisonous, and they only come out after heavy rain.

Whether you choose to sun bathe on one of the island's many beaches or explore the forts and estate ruins, Antigua's combination of relaxation and adventure are sure to appeal to anyone seeking a vacation in paradise.
